First Person Account of the Alamo Massacre- from a Mexican Officer
By Eros Faust
This book first became controversial when it reported that Davie Crockett didn't die fighting the Mexicans, but was executed, hacked to death actually, after he was captured. That's just a small part of the tale, but an important one.

What's most important here is the War from a Mexican perspective, the ruthless criticism of Santa Anna, and the inside reports about the bungling of the entire affair by the Mexican military. You'll discover, for instance:

Troops assaulting the Alamo only had seven rounds of ammunition each.

The night before the battle, all but 10 of the "American" forces were in Bejar at a dance. Had the Mexican Army blocked the bridge between the town and the Alamo, the battle would never have been fought.

The phrase "Remember the Alamo" doesn't refer to the battle itself, but to the massacre of prisoners after the battle was over.

In the assault, only one ladder made it to the wall, the other ladder bearers having been shot down during the approach.

In the smoke and confusion of battle, many Mexican soldiers were shot by other Mexicans.

Being wounded in the battle was a death sentence. In the haste to put down the rebellion, Santa Anna had failed to bring either doctors or medical supplies with him.

The final facts I'll mention are about the surrender of James Fannin and the Goliad Massacre. The massacre at the Alamo was limited to about seven men, including Crockett. The Goliad massacre killed over 300 men who had surrendered to the Mexican Army.

Interesting first person account.

What was Santa Anna thinking?!
By Tony Ramirez
It's a tough read in the beginning. It'll take you a couple of chapters to get used to the sentence structure created by the translation (I read an entire paragraph that was one sentence). Once you get in time with the writing you'll really get into the stories. Remember, this is the Mexican army's perspective on Santa Anna's march into Texas to teach the colonists a lesson. It's interesting to read about the miserable conditions that the soldiers had to endure. I also found it interesting that, much like during the Mexican Revolution, Santa Anna's army was traveling with many of the soldiers families with them. De la Pena was flabbergasted when he saw the women destroying fine bales of cotton and spreading it out on the banks of a river to use as a sort of carpet so their feet wouldn't get muddy when coming out after bathing. Many stories, many interesting facts from the beginning of the march to the Alamo, Goliad, San Jacinto, and finally the retreat back to Mexico. Forgive my long sentences. I tend to write like the author of the book I am reading at the time. The next book I have in line will correct this.

GREAT TEXT!
By Roger Borroel
This book deserves a five star rating because it is the first primary Mexican document that describes the Texan Revolt of 1836 fully. From the start to the finish, it offers us important details and facts on the event. It's author, Lt. Col. Jose Enrique de la Pena, was a man noted for his intelligence and sensitivity on many of the events that he personally witnessed, such as the surrender and execution of Davy Crockett and his boys at the Alamo. His Diary, has led me in my search for more Mexican documentation, which I have translated and published since the mid-1990s. At this moment, my new text on the man, A Primary Biography of him, includes all of his written works till the day of his death on October 10, 1840, at 9 p.m. This man is often noted in the histories of the Texan War only because he was such an amazing personality whose sole wish was to serve his country honorably. This book is a real treat to those who want to know the truth of the revolt.
