Sad, But Vital

It is unfortunate that those who most need to read it are the least likely to do so. The narratives are uplifting in a sense and sad at the same time. For those who believe that the slave experience was accurately portrayed by cotton candy like "Gone With The Wind" and other entertainment of that ilk, this should be a rude awakening. On the other hand, they are just as likely to conclude that the slaves were "playing the race card."

Very interesting to read about ex-slaves accounts during slavery. I thought some of the questions asked by the interviewers could have been more expansive in what they asked. I found it most interesting how the older generations mostly thought the younger generations of the time were "going in the wrong direction" and were not thought of as being respectful to older generation of that time period.

Slaves - Our shame.

It is difficult for our generation to fully realize what slave life was like, but these first-person memoirs are so vivid and without rancor I was often in tears and so ashamed that some of my ancestors owned slaves. It is heartbreaking that we could be so inhumane and call ourselves good people. Man's inhumanity to man is chilling. If you value true southern history, these slave narratives are for you.

Very slow and descripted

This is my second time reading this book, why, I have no idea! It is a classic and I love the word usages in creating such description. But, the descriptions just go on and on and on and on. I realize that way back then, before TV, internet, etc. the authors had to paint a very detailed description as to what is going on in the story. If you like a lot of description, this is a must-read book. If you like a lot more dialog and getting to the point, then this is not a book that you would like. It has only 250 pages and it just took me forever to get through it even with skipping over paragraph after paragraph. The one really good thing is that I have increased my own vocabulary!!

Don't mean to criticize Mr. N. Hawthorne but...

I had never read this book before and I love reading the classics. Mr. Hawthorne was extremely verbose in this novel. The story line was interesting but there was so much description of every minute detail of the house, the garden, how people were dressed, etc. The descriptions did paint a picture but I wish he had moved the plot along a bit more quickly. Then he wraps everything up in a neat little package in the last chapter which was disappointing. He took so long to tell the story, I wish he had taken longer to reveal all that was to be revealed. But who am I to criticize Nathaniel Hawthorne?

Just ok

About 80 percent of this book is dedicated to describing the characters' state of mind and the environment around them. Only about twenty percent is actually about actions taken by the characters. I guess if you like that sort of thing, you will enjoy the book. It just wasn't for me.
