Generally prefer shorter works (for poetry) than this but it is good.

I have not sat down to read a book of poetry in a half dozen years and it certainly moves at a different pace than what I have become accustomed to. I am glad I gave this a read.
The book collects the first four books and twelve years of Maya's poetry. Although I generally preferred the earlier two books, I will put this one back on my shelf with a great number of dog-eared pages marking my favorites.
Maya really needs to be read aloud. Although I would not consider her a great poet, she has a strong rhythm and sense of imagery. We experience clearly what it is to love and live and laugh and struggle as a poor black woman through the 1970's.
Her simple verse becomes the perfect tool to deliver the slices of life she has chosen to share.
