About the Author
Elaine Biech, president of ebb associates inc, a strategic implementation, leadership development, and experiential learning consulting firm, has been in the field for thirty years helping organizations work through large-scale change. She has presented at dozens of national and international conferences and has been featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Management Update, Investors Business Daily, and Fortune Magazine. She is the author and editor of over 50 books including the ASTD Hand Book for Workplace Learning Professionals, ASTD Leadership Handbook, 10 Steps to Successful Training, The Ultimate Trainer, Thriving Through Change, The Business of Consulting, 2nd ed., and Training for Dummies. A long time volunteer for ASTD, she has served on ASTD's National Board of Directors, was the recipient of the 1992 ASTD Torch Award, the 2004 ASTD Volunteer Staff Partnership Award, and the 2006 Gordon Bliss Memorial Award. Elaine was instrumental in compiling the CPLP study guides and has designed five ASTD Certificate Programs. In addition to her work with ASTD, she has served on the Independent Consultants Association's (ICA) Advisory Committee and on the Instructional Systems Association (ISA) board of directors.

(a) It's nice to have all this information in one place--and to have it in a definitive way.
(b) The voices are a mix of experience and academic know-how.
(c) The progression of the book seems about right for a basic to advanced set-up
CONS
(1) This is a collection of articles, so the connectivity, while attempted, is not thorough and leads to repeat information.
(2) The writing styles are vastly different and this is distracting.
(3) The job aids provided as tables are ironically difficult to follow at times.
(4) I know this book isn't a training, but it could use, at least, a (better) set of outcomes and outputs for the reader at the start.
(5) This collection is suited for those people who have a learning intelligence that is academic and reading-based.
(6) Ironically (hmm, a 2nd time), this book does not focus on application by the reader but instead on expertise of the writer--this makes for some of the writing to seem only practical to the unique situation or academic theory presented.

Buy a used card copy of the book, not the e-book

The going rate for a used book is about 1/2 the cost of the e-book and the book comes with a DVD. I bought this for a college class and the inability to reference the page numbers was a bit of a hassle. The structure is not the easiest way to way to express ideas. It's an edited collection by different authors, it presents largely overlapping content from different points of view that do not always agree. That imparts a wide understanding, but it's not an easy format to learn from. And yea, it's too expensive, especially for an e-book.

Real life Usable Experience in one Place

ASTD's Handbook for workplace learning professionals is a real time, relevant reference. With 50 experts sharing their experience the handbook becomes a tremendous resource in sorting through options to accelerate learning for results. If you are a busy trainer in the midst of designing and delivering learning interventions, this is the volume to have on hand. The authors are credible icons and their experience is priceless. It's been a great addition to my library.
